As anyone who’s glanced at our In The Workshop section recently will already know, a certain Pininfarina Spidereuropa we’re working on has gotten us all dewy-eyed and wistful. When we looked in the boot, though, the nostalgia went into overdrive.
Tucked away in a little brown envelope was a stash of photos from the height of the Woodland Car Sales days. Growing up with our father working his way up from a service technician to sales manager of this Fiat (and, later, Alfa Romeo) main dealership in Norwich, this place forms a massively important milestone in italicar’s timeline.
You’ll have to excuse us a trip down memory lane, but without Woodlands I very much doubt there would be an italicar today. Who knows, we may even have ended up specialising in German cars…perish the thought.

The open day for the car “designed with a computer, silenced by a laser and built by a robot”. Woodlands’ marketing guys sure earnt their Peronis when they came up with the slogan they stickered the window up….
An August 1st line-up from when the “new reg” still meant something. And chrome bumpers were still de riguer.
A main dealership service bay with a vice hastily fixed to a bench and not a laptop or diagnostics machine in sight. Who says we’ve made progress?
Look at those wheels. The paint already looks flat as a pancake and in need of a decent polish but, forget that, look at those wheels. (Oh, and if you don’t get this model right in the quiz, you’re on the wrong website, I’d recommend here instead).

If anyone knows this area of Norwich (Salhouse Road) what’s most remarkable here is not the car (which is lovely but, sadly, it looks like it failed to survive through until MoT records were computerised) but the complete lack of housing estate.
I’m not sure what I’d rather magically find in the italicar workshop tomorrow morning, that car or the sign.
We can’t quite make out the price in the ‘screen there, but whatever it is, that little stunner would be worth a lot more in the same condition today!
