Description

You have just happened upon a very rare specimen indeed.

THE MODEL

The Maserati Coupé, often referred to as the 4200, was produced between 2001 and 2007 alongside the Spyder. Buyers could choose between two options: the GT, featuring a 6-speed manual transmission, or the CC, equipped with an automated manual with paddle shifters. In late 2004, a facelifted version was introduced, bringing subtle updates to the front grille, bumpers, and rear details.

More than just a stylistic refresh of the 3200 model, the 4200 marked a pivotal moment in Maserati’s history. It severed ties with the outdated Biturbo engine and Maserati’s troubled past under de Tomaso, signalling a new era paired with another Italian automotive giant; the prancing horses of Ferrari.

The heart of the 4200 is the F136 engine, developed in Maranello, which would later appear in Ferrari models such as the F430 and 458. This engine almost single-handedly powered a turnaround in Maserati’s success, driving countless new models for nearly two decades.

In its original form, the 4.2L V8 produced 385 horsepower and 333 lb-ft of torque, propelling the car from 0 to 60 mph in under 4.9 seconds, with a top speed of 177 mph. However, the real highlight is the engine’s sound—a thrilling roar that epitomizes Italian performance and makes Jeremy Clarkson pull *that* face.

During its six-year production run, only 6,449 Coupés were sold, and just 17% (1,078) of those were ordered with the manual transmission. Of those, only 214 were right-hand drive (RHD). The number of facelifted, RHD, manual Coupés is even smaller, with experts estimating fewer than 10 ever made.

This makes the 2005 facelifted manual Coupé GT we are selling a true rarity. The Gransport MC-Victory is, rightfully, probably the most sought after 4200 model, but this is right up there in terms of scarcity. A unicorn in the world of Maserati.

THE SPEC

It is finished in Rosso Mondiale, coupled with Avorio (or Ivory) leather upholstery, Bordeaux stitching and Bordeaux carpets. Needless to say, it is absolutely stunning inside and out. When the first owner filled out the original order sheet, they knew what they were doing!

The car also benefits from several optional extras above the standard facelifted 4200:

  • Nero dashboard covering

  • Electric folding / heated mirrors

  • Electric memory seats (also heated)

  • Cruise control

  • SatNav

THE CONDITION

The car has covered just 61k miles and is in very good condition throughout. It has been cherished throughout its life, but it has also been used and enjoyed so there are, of course, some blemishes to mention.

These cars are notorious for collecting gravel-rash on the front-ends and, while there are a few small stone chips, this is certainly one of the fresher faced 4200s we have seen. Inside, some of the plastic components have succumbed to the sticky finish which will be familiar to the owner of any similar-aged Italian car. The biggest cosmetic flaw is a scuff to the passenger side front wheel, which could easily be rectified.

Driving it, though, there is nothing to quibble about or distract you from the unique experience of manipulating a Ferrari-derived NA, V8, 385bhp engine with a proper, full-fat 6-speed ‘box. Everything works as it should – including the rare SatNav. These discs are normally lost somewhere along the way and are expensive to replace, but everything is present and correct here. (We wouldn’t recommend relying on the navigation to get you somewhere, though, as it is clunky at best by today’s standards!)

The car comes complete with an MoT through to 21st of May 2025, and has an impressive stack of service history. There are 15 stamps in the book (from numerous renowned Maserati specialists such as Shiltech, Auto Shield, Gray Paul, etc) and for the past couple of years it has been serviced by us ourselves, so we know the car inside and out.

These cars are not as temperamental as you might expect. They sit in-between the era of old-fashioned turbo-charged engines being pushed beyond their limits, and the convoluted electronic wizardry of more modern vehicles. The perfect middle ground! The clutch is considered probably the most vital piece of maintenance on the 4200 Coupé GT and this one enjoyed a new one being fitted by Autoshield Maserati 18k miles ago.

SUMMARY

If you’re looking in particular for a UK-spec, RHD, manual Maserati Coupé GT…then, congratulations, you’ve just found one of the handful that exist!

But, even if your requirements are not quite that specific, this car represents ridiculous value for money. Finding something else which ticks as many boxes as this (red, Italian, fast, beautiful, noisy) while also genuinely being relatively practical (comfortable on long trips, 4 usable seats and a decent boot space) will require several steps up in the price range this car sits in!
